Turnus I – 12.07 – Daily Report day 12

To moje pierwsze Korczakowo.

12 th of July
Last night’s activities began round the camp fire. After a few songs all the campers were led by 2 torch bearers from the fire place to the Korczak memorial site. With all the campers standing in a semi-circle round two enlarged pictures of the two patrons (Korczak and Jerzy) we witnessed a very touching ceremony. A large Menorah and Star of David were lit up with candles together with a memorial candle on the cement slab that is inscribed with details about Korczak. The ceremony included readings with kids performing in the background, a video clip and the reading of 6 quotes in Polish and Hebrew (read by the two Bar’s). The final part of the ceremony was taking the Korczakowo Vow. The Polish was read by Beata (Chief of the camp) together with Batia who read it in Hebrew. Sentence by sentence would be read and repeated by all the campers, loud, strong and promising. We formed a circle for the closing assembly and Beata went around handing each camper the vow which was printed on a card. The climax was at the very end when the campers marched in pairs to the memorial, stood for a minute and were then replaced by another pair (in a military kind of way).
This morning Batia and Avi went for their usual shower at 07:00. Unlike most of the other days, the water was still cold. Even though the furnace was burning, the wood being wet from the rain was not doing the job.  We were told that half an hour later there was hot water.
All in all this has been a relatively quiet day. Before the morning activity (workshops) we took the opportunity to take final pictures as a group. Batia spent a good couple of hours in the kitchen helping the cook cut the cabbage for lunch. The girls were excused from the afternoon activity so that they could pack and be ready for departure early tomorrow morning. The two Bar’s and Liya are writing notes to their tent partners and their counselor, Inbar is shooting her part of the video clip.
Tonight the Israeli group is presenting their favorite songs. Due to the rainy weather, this will be held in the big tent, “The Circus”. It will be our departing gift to the camp as early in the morning, at 6:45, we depart for the airport.
This is a good opportunity to thank all the personnel, the campers, the counselors, Jan the life guard, the leaders, the general staff, the kitchen staff – everyone, for making this once again a memorable experience for us all. We came with high expectations and are returning home happy and content- mission accomplished.
